Awards
The Community and Public Sector Union is party to a variety of Higher Education national awards as well as a range of Institutional (One University) awards.
The CPSU have fought to maintain the award system in NSW and in the federal jurisdiction. This history of involvement in the maintenance and improvement of award conditions continues from well before the NSW Universities (Conditions of Employment) State Award and its transformation to the Higher Education General Staff Salaries (HEGSS) Award which underpins the majority of General Staff conditions.
Many of the conditions contained in these awards have been removed or transferred to the enterprise agreements by way of compulsion through the award simplifying process as is required under the Howard Government's Workplace Relations Act 1996. The award simplification process allows for only 20 prescribed allowable matters, thus limiting the protection of workers entitlements.
Enterprise Agreements
Under the federal Workplace Relations Act the predominant method for Unions to ensure most conditions and salary matters is an agreement for the Union's members.
All CPSU Enterprise Agreements are 170 LJ Agreements, which means that they are collective agreements that have the Union and the University as the parties to that agreement.
This ensures that the CPSU membership can be represented when the implementation or interpretation of the agreement is under dispute.
The CPSU as a proud history of negotiating some of the best conditions in any agreement through its work in NSW Universities, as the history of the clauses contained in these agreements clearly demonstrates.
