Prison Officers Legal Fund

In June 2003 the Association established a Legal Fund as a protective measure for non-commissioned prison officers who may be charged with a criminal offence in the workplace.

The establishment of the Fund required a fundamental change in the Association's Constitution rule and the construction of bank accounts, a Legal Fund Constitution, etc.

As you know, the corrections industry can be difficult and dangerous and that uniformed staff are often placed in positions of direct conflict with inmates and members of the public. Uniformed staff are often unfairly accused by inmates of criminal behaviour. Because the PSA does not provide financial assistance to any member who has been charged with a criminal offence, the PSA Executive decided to establish the Fund.

Only financial members of the union are entitled to contribute to the Fund. Subscription is $4.00 per fortnight which is tax deductible and includes the GST.

I encourage you to join and suggest that you contact any member of the POVB Executive or your PSA Organiser should you require any further information.

Yours faithfully
John Cahill
General Secretary
