Education & Training - Bulleting re Restructure

Date: 06 February 98
Author: Public Service Association of NSW

Following is a bulletin sent to all TAFE institutes, to school education district offices, and to non- school delegates in the new Department of Education and Training (i.e. the old TAFE, DSE, DTEC areas).

Please note:The bulletin was broadcast by fax late yesterday (i.e. Thursday). We think it got through OK, but we had computer programme problems. The software was saying our broadcast wasn't successful even though our test broadcasts were OK. Still, we are not 100 certain. If you are in the Department of Education and Training (schools excepted) and have not received this document, please copy this version and distribute to your colleagues.

Thank you.

Department of Education and Training
Campaign Bulletin

You have already received an E-Mail from Ken Boston saying that on Friday morning you may be told that you are displaced or excess to the Department’s requirements. PSA officers and delegates attending the DET Amalgamation Consultative Committee were told nothing about this. In fact Steve Buckley told General Secretary Janet Good that Ken Boston would meet with her on Friday to advise her of the details of the new structure and function. The consultation is a sham.

Ken Boston’s E-Mail and whatever else the Department releases is released without consultation with the PSA. This is a matter of great concern to all PSA members. The PSA has pursued the issue at the highest ministerial level.

It is obvious that the Department has been paying nothing more than lip service to the consultative process. Now is the time to take some action to pressure the Department into changing its attitude on consultation. The union must be consulted on matters which so vitally affect members’ employment.

The campaign strategy from now

  1. Meetings should be held at all offices. The meetings may be stopwork or lunchtime dependent on the wishes of members. If members decide on stopwork meetings they will get the full support of the PSA. If a PSA officer or delegate does not contact your office to organise a meeting before Monday 9 February, contact the PSA.

  2. Delegates should update members on restructure issues at the meeting. Members should consider appropriate industrial action to support the PSA’s position on full and thorough consultation.

  3. The PSA will continue to lobby the Government at all levels. We will also be sending out information about how members can pressure their local MPs into supporting our position.

  4. If there is any contribution that you feel you can make to our efforts please contact the PSA.
