50 day walk against racism

Date: 23 June 97
Author: Public Service Association of NSW

A group of people have organised a "Say NO to Racism Walk" from Hornsby to Ipswich.

Ipswich is the objective not only because it is the electorate of a prominent former Liberal candidate, but it is also the city which won an Australian Reconciliation Award at the recent Reconciliation Convention. The walkers will present the Ipswich City Council with a Certificate of Achievement. Among those greeting them will be ex-Labor Leader and ex-Governor General, Bill Hayden.

More than 50 people will leave Hornsby at 9.30am on Sunday, 29th June, from outside the Aquatic Centre. At least four of them plan to go all the way to Ipswich. They are keen to have people join them for a few hours or days as they pass through the towns and cities on their route.

The walk will take 50 days, ending in Ipswich on Sunday August 17. There will be a day of rest between each of the 10 stages. Each stage (except Hornsby) starts at the Council Chamber of the particular town. Each days walk is 20-30 kilometres. If the walk doesn't end in a town, then walkers will be bussed into the nearest town and the next morning will be bussed back to resume walking.

The stages appear in the Calender on our home page (scroll down towards the bottom).

People walking must make their own arrangements for food and accommodation, and short course walkers should bring their own water supply.

The organisers have written to the PSA asking for our support. The Executive has endorsed the request.

A letter has been sent to delegates in cities and town on the route encouraging them to give local support to the walkers.

Further information and registration details can be obtained from the organiser, Anne Sacco, on 047 842 030.
