Restrictions continue at DOCS

Date: 31 January 97
Author: Public Service Association of NSW

Staff at the Department of Community Services will continue restrictions on workloads.

District Officers will deal with no more than 12 cases at any one time, and all staff are working no more than 140 hours per flexi-period (ie 4 weeks).

The Department took the PSA to the Industrial Relations Commission early in January over the restrictions.

The Department was claiming that they have introduced a new workload management system, and therefore the bans should be lifted.

The PSA pointed out that the system had not been implemented and that the bans would not be lifted until the system is introduced to all offices and is operating satisfactorily.

At hearings on Wednesday 29 January, before Justice Marks, the Department declined to seek orders to have the bans lifted. They realised such orders would only inflame the dispute.

So concludes another episode in the PSA's long running campaign to have DOCS offices adequately staffed and workloads kept within reasonable limits.
