Sign the ACTU's petition on national OHS laws and your rights

27 August 2008

ACTUohs" At present there are 9 different OH&S Laws operating in Australia. The Federal Government and all the States and Territory Governments have agreed to move towards a simpler more streamlined approach to OH&S law.

There is a lot at stake for Australian workers -- close to 8,000 Australians die each year from work-related incidents or illnesses. That equates to around 20 deaths every single day.

Around 690,000 people are injured or fall sick from work related causes and up to 1.5 million workers are exposed to cancer causing substances and processes at work.

Employer Associations have been lobbying Federal and State governments for years to adopt a single national OH&S system claiming that confusion and red tape are preventing good OH&S Laws.

Unions have supported harmonisation, not for the same reasons as employers (i.e. to reduce workers rights to the level of the worst OH&S law in Australia) but to use the best OH&S law operating in Australia as the basis of any national OH&S Model law.

At the moment some workers are worse off than others merely because of the State or Territory they work in, or because they are covered by a weakened Commonwealth OH&S system.

Now is the time to fight for the highest standards for a model OHS law.
