Close the Gap Day - films

CLOSETHEGAP Day is on Tuesday, April 22.

This day is designed to give Australians the opportunity to come together and show their support for closing the 17-year life expectancy gap between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders and other Australians. Such events also serve as a reminder to our governments that you expect them to meet their recent commitments to CLOSETHEGAP.

As such, the National Office of the LHMU is organising an event at 6.30pm on April 22nd and is inviting all interested people, their friends and their families to come along! We will be showing two documentaries - firstly, a short introduction to the 'Close the Gap' Campaign, produced by Oxfam. For the second documentary, we will be showing the amazing 'Liyarn Ngarn'.

This compelling documentary tells of the devastation and inhumanity bought upon Indigenous people in every aspect of their daily lives. Personal stories of injustice are recounted by renowned English actor Pete Postlethwaite, as told to him by Patrick Dodson and Bill Johnson, an old English school friend, whose Indigenous son Louis died tragically. Respected songman, Archie Roach, adds his powerful lyrics and voice to this often painful, yet inspiring, journey of strength.

Entry will be by note donation, with all proceeds going towards the Lingiari Foundation. The Lingiari Foundation is a "research and development organisation that seeks to be active, vocal and strategic in advancing Indigenous Rights, promoting Reconciliation and developing Indigenous leadership". The Foundation also produced the documentary.
