NOTES ON THE COURSES
Delegates Training
Please note that you do not have to be a delegate to obtain trade union training leave or to attend the delegates training. However, where places on delegate courses are scarce, delegates will be given first preference. There is no longer any strict rule about the order in which delegates' training is undertaken. However, we recommend that delegates and members attend the courses in the following order where possible:
1. Role of the Delegate (prev. Dels One) ; 2. Practical Skills for Delegates (prev. Dels Two)
Introduction to the Union
This is a 1-DAY ORIENTATION COURSE for both members & delegates. Topics include union history, PSA decision-making structures & sources of workers rights.
Women in the Union
This is a 2-DAY COURSE for women members who would like to know more about their union & their rights at work. The course includes topics such as your rights, entitlements in the workplace; union structures, assertiveness, EEO & anti-discrimination.
Winning in the Workplace (previously called Organising Skills)
This 2-DAY COURSE looks at how to build the union in the workplace. Participants will have the opportunity to analyse issues that impact on the ability of unions to organise. They will also be given some practical organising tools. This course is open to all members.
Speaking in Public
This one-day workshop will assist members and delegates to develop their public speaking skills.
Dealing with Bullying in the Workplace
This one-day module is designed to assist members & delegates in dealing with bullying and harassment at work. This course is open to all members on a first come, first served basis.
Surviving the IR Changes
This course focuses on assisting members to develop effective campaigning strategies to fight the onslaught of the IR changes. Areas covered include - updating members about the reforms, the IR changes and enterprise bargaining, and campaigning to protect member's rights and strengthen the union in the workplace.
Role of the Delegate (previously Delegates One)
This 1-DAY COURSE looks at the role of the delegate in relation to specific issues such as discrimination, disciplinaries and grievances. Pre-requisite: Introduction to the Union OR Women in the Union
Practical Skills for Delegates (previously Delegates Two)
This focus of this 2-DAY COURSE is on skills development. Meetings & negotiation are the primary areas covered. However, the course also covers other issues of relevance, such as rights & entitlements & consultation. An organising workshop is also included in the program. Pre-requisite: Introduction to the Union OR Women in the Union
Introduction to the Union OR Women in the Union are still the recommended prerequisites for (1) & (2) above.
Occupational Health & Safety and Workers Compensation
The OHS & Workers Compensation Training has been broken up into modules which can be done as single units rather than as blocks. It is hoped this flexibility will allow more members to access these training opportunities. However it is important to do the units sequentially to get the most of the program. If you have attended the previous 2 day OHS & W/Compensation course then you need not do Modules 1 and 2.
OHS Module 1. OHS & WC - OHS Legislation including Risk Management
OHS Module 2. OHS & WC - OHS Management Systems and Workers Compensation
OHS Modules 3. OHS Leadership - OHS Consultation
