Rally to protect public sector jobs and services tomorrow

14 March 2007

Public sector workers will rally to protect 20,000 jobs in Sydney Town Hall tomorrow.

They are calling on both sides of politics to rule out further job cuts to the public sector over the term of the next government.

More than 25,000 workers from across NSW have signed a petition calling on leaders to protect public sector jobs and services and retain workers rights under the state Industrial Relations system.

"This rally is the culmination of over a year of campaigning to protect public sector jobs and the services our members provide to the community of NSW," said General Secretary of the Public Service Association John Cahill.

"Peter Debnam has backed down from cutting 29,000 jobs to 20,000 but continues to ignore the devastating effect these cuts will have on services and workers.

"The Labor Government has campaigned hard against the Coalition job cuts and we are looking for a firm commitment to protect public services over the term of the next Parliament.

"In just a few weeks tens of thousands of workers have signed a petition calling for jobs, services and rights at work to be protected in NSW - more than one signature for every job that will be cut under Peter Debnam."
