Getting a vote? Howard Government makes it harder.

16 October 2006

The Howard Government passed changes to the electoral laws in June this year. They make it harder for people to enrol and thus get a vote.

The changes will mostly impact on young people who leave it to the last minute to enrol. The electoral rolls will close on the day the writs are issued which leave people with only a few hours in which to enrol.

The new electoral laws will also impact on established voters who have changed address, etc, and need to update their enrolments. Aboriginal, itinerant, and isolated people are also likely to disproportionately affected.

And remember, the Prime Minister can call an election at any time - he can take by surprise unenrolled people and incorrectly enrolled people.

The regulations which bring them into effect are expected in the next month or so.

The PSA has produced the leaflet attached below on the changes to enrolment and voting.

Members are advised to get their enrolments up-to-date as soon as possible, and to encourage their young relatives and friends to enrol well before the NSW and federal elections.
