Union support of Anti-Poverty Week and Make Poverty History

13 October 2006

The ACTU is a partner in Anti-Poverty Week 15-21 October. Our international aid agency, Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA, is a partner in the Make Poverty History campaign.

APHEDA will be holding many activities over coming months, including Stand Up on 16 October, and a mass mobilisation in relation to the meeting of the G20 in Melbourne 18-19 November.

The international trade union movement has been part of the Global Call for Action Against Poverty right from the start, and we are enthusiastic proponents of the Make Poverty History aims (more and better aid, trade justice, drop the debt) as well as the UN Millennium Development Goals, which aim to halve world poverty by 2015.

In October, ACTU and Union Aid Abroad-APHEDA will produce and circulate to unions new promotional materials supporting the Make Poverty History campaign, linking it with the global Decent Work agenda, Union Aid Abroad's current Make Life Fair campaign, and our own campaign to defend Australian working people from Howard's attacks on unions and social security.
