Gender Equality set to reverse

22 March 2006

A new brochure by CPSU Federal Women's Industrial Officer Suzanne Hammond outlines why Australia is losing the battle for pay equity.

In Forward to the Past - The Escalator to Gender Equality - Set to Reverse can be downloaded from the pdf attachment below.

Suzanne Hammond argues:

"In Australia, advances made in pay equity and for equality in the workforce, have taken a turn for the worse. The conservative Federal Government gained control of the Senate in July 2005 and has taken the opportunity to push through industrial relations legislation and welfare-to-work legislation that will result in the lowering of the minimum wage and the removal of many workers entitlements.

The Federal Government has lagged behind countries such as the United Kingdom, New Zealand and Canada in attempting to redress the problem of pay equity."
