Job cuts – Prison Officers walk out

13 September 2004

Prison officers at Long Bay Gaol decided at 2.00pm today to walk off the job for at least 24 hours as a result of a decision by management to cut 15 positions effective immediately.

John Cahill, General Secretary of the Public Service Association, said: "I am appalled that management of Corrective Services can make such a decision effective immediately without proper consultation with our members."

Mr Cahill added: "Following this decision the Association has sought to have the matter deferred until proper negotiation takes place. This has been denied by management and as such I am fully supportive of the action taken by the members."

Mr Cahill went on to say: "The Association is aware that management of Corrective Services is planning major cut backs in all gaols throughout the State and if this is the way they plan to proceed it will only lead to similar action by our members elsewhere."
