Schools Spectacular Win -- Petition Withdrawn

28 November 2003

A welcome small victory in our battle to stop 1,000 job losses in DET & TAFE.

DET has agreed to reinstate 10 and possibly as many as 14 positions in the Arts Unit which helps organise the Schools Spectacular and related events. The department had planned to scrap 14 positions.

They have also agreed to talk about similar reinstatements in the Sponsorship Unit which raises a heap of money for the Spectacular and related events.

The PSA for its part has agreed to stop petitioning parents and citizens, and demonstrating, outside the Entertainment Centre where the Spectacular is being performed.

PSA staff, with support of some parents and members, began collecting signatures in support of maintaining the Schools Spectacular at the first session today. The signs we had up said "Sign the Petition to ensure the Schools Spectacular has a 21st Birthday next year".

And we had also sent out a media release yesterday which generated quite a bit of interest.

The agreement to withdraw the petitions also applies to those sent yesterday to DET/TAFE members and to members in schools.

Please tell the your teachers, parents, P&Cs etc about the win and the withdrawal of petitions.
