Fight for Yanco Goes to Henty

22 September 2003

The fight to keep 44 jobs earmarked for transfer from Yanco will move to the Henty Field Days tomorrow (Tuesday 23 September).

Employees of the Department of Agriculture will be protesting and distributing information to visitors to try and build community support to keep their jobs in Yanco.

It's important for the community to understand the impact the recent decisions will have on the local economy," Shane O'Brien' Assistant General Secretary said today.

"Without any consultation with the community, the staff or their union, Mr Macdonald has made a decision to take $2,000,146 out of Yanco in salaries alone. That's before you even consider the flow on effects in the wider economy," Mr O'Brien said.

Staff will be outside the Henty Field Days as the new Minister for Agriculture, Ian Macdonald MLC officially opens them.

People are angry that they are being forced to choose between the community they love and their careers while the Minister runs around pretending he has a commitment to the people regional NSW. They want people to know the facts about the decisions the Minister has taken and just how they will hurt the community," Mr O'Brien said.

The protest will take place from 12.30 pm on Tuesday July 23rd 2003. Information about the job losses will be distributed throughout the day.

"Our jobs, our community."
