Nowra TAFE administration

Executive, 28 July 2008

Decision

Report adopted

Report

A PSA meeting was held with concerned members employed in clerical positions at the Nowra TAFE office on the 23 July 2008 to discuss the Institute's decision to establish customer service centres at the counter by reconfiguring/redesigning jobs without proper consultation. Issues of concern include:

  • There are considerable delays in resolving system problems relating to the new CLAMS and WebCR systems due to insufficient resourcing of the helpline. Only one person is employed at the Institute helpline since the central IT/Systems support was devolved to the Institute level.

  • The Institute proposes to create generic, multi-skilled roles in the new customer service centres. The position descriptions and grades for current positions are based on specialised roles and will need to be reviewed and evaluated.

  • There is a need to review administration staffing levels at Colleges as workloads are becoming unmanageable. Enrolments at Nowra have increased considerably in recent years to the extent Nowra TAFE is now the second largest college within the Illawarra Institute.

  • The office is being redesigned in accordance with the customer service philosophy and desks are being positioned at the counter causing privacy and confidentiality concerns.

  • All office staff have been given authority to approve concessions/exemptions which is a high level responsibility.
