Aboriginal Education Assistants (AEA) name change

Executive, 28 April 2008, EX54/08

Decision

That the Executive agree, subject to member agreement, to the Crown Employees (School and Administrative and Support Staff) Award change so that our members who work with Aboriginal or Torres Straight Islander students become known as Aboriginal Education Officers.

Report

The PSA have been negotiating with the Department of Education and Training to achieve a change to the classification name of Aboriginal Education Assistants. This is proposed to affect our members in schools who work with students from an Aboriginal or Torres Straight Islander Background.

The DET has written to the PSA to agree to the name change "Aboriginal Education Officer". This name was suggested by PSA representatives some time ago.

The Association is presently consulting with members and with representatives on the PSA Aboriginal Education Assistant Working Group and should they agree the DET will be notified that the new name is acceptable. The award will them be changed, by agreement, to reflect the change classification name.
