Assault at a Wagga Wagga school

Central Council, 12 September 2007

Decision

Report adopted

Report

On 7th August an OH&S incident occurred at a Wagga Wagga Public School where members were assaulted.

Following this incident, the Association asked what actions the Department is pursuing and strategies being developed to avoid future occurrences.

Following a meeting of members on 31st August, and the Department not responding to our earlier request, the Association sought immediate consultation and risk assessment to be conducted on the class/unit, and training be provided to staff. Whilst a risk assessment had been done on the particular student it was considered inadequate, as it did not address all of the issues, particularly the needs of the students and interaction. Also, no discussion had occurred with members on student behaviour plans.

The Department in responding indicated that they had met with staff and developed a consultative process and redeveloping risk assessment plans and an overall plan for the unit, also indicating that appropriate training is planned for all staff. The Department also advised that an embargo was imposed on any further enrolments to the unit until the end of the year.

Whilst the Department was indicating to the Association proposed action, no advice was being conveyed to staff at the school and in some instances alternatives occurring.

The Association has sought details of when a complete risk assessment and all staff being consulted in such assessment is to occur as a matter of urgency. Also a stop work meeting is planned for Monday 10th September 2007.
