Aboriginal Education Assistants matters

Central Council, 19 June 2006

Decision

Report adopted

Report

The Aboriginal Education Assistants Steering Committee meet on June 2nd at PSA House. The committee agreed upon a final draft of the revised Statement of Duties. In particular this document properly defines the role of AEAs regarding home visits and discipline matters.

The document also reinforces the central task of supporting and promoting respect, pride and awareness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander culture in school communities.

Following a state-wide vote by AEA members the committee endorsed a proposal to change the title of AEA to Indigenous Education Officer.

The other major issue of concern is appropriate payment for work performed out of normal working hours and in school holidays.

PSA Industrial staff will be meeting with DET this week to seek endorsement of the name change and revised statement of duties and discuss processes to achieve enhanced remuneration for AEAs.
