2004 NSW Public Sector Workforce Profile

The Premier's Department (Public Employment Office) has released the latest (2004) edition of the annual Workforce Profile. It is also available on-line at:
http://rrd.premiers.nsw.gov.au/rrd/public/WPOverview2004.pdf

The attached pages extracted from the body of the report summarises the "Main Features". It shows that overall employment levels have remained relatively stable with a 1.7% increase from June 2003 to June 2004. A quick synopsis of the Attached summary highlights the following trends:

  • NSW public service employment represents 10.6% of the NSW labour force
  • As at June 2004:
  1. Total (FTE) staffing was 291,701 - a 1.7% increase from June 2003
  2. Of total public sector employment:
    82.1% Permanent
    8.7% Temporary
    7.3% Casual
  3. Average remuneration for females was 89.2% of average remuneration for males which represents a slight closing of the gap recorded in the previous year
  4. Other reporting categories included Region, Movement, Age, Gender and a new reporting category of "Occupational Group".

Of note is that there is still no information recording levels of labour hire employment in the NSW public sector.
