TAFE WSI “Class Support Review” update

09 September 2008

On 4 September, the PSA met with TAFE management, at their request, to receive the proposed 'without prejudice' document for the class support review, prior to formal negotiations.

The main proposed changes are:

  • Change of some classifications eg, from GA/Toolstore to Technical Assistant
  • Recruitment to permanent positions
  • Direct appointment of long term temps who have undergone a merit selection process
  • Conversion of some full time positions to part year.
Each college will be impacted differently. Some positions will not be affected eg, existing casuals and permanent staff.

At this stage, the proposal does not appear to be an attempt to relocate resources or staff, or to significantly change functions currently performed.

Over the next two weeks (starting at Nepean College on Monday 8 September), WSI management will be meeting with class support staff to explain the proposal and its impact on you and your college. A PSA representative will be present at all of these meetings.

The PSA will also be conducting our own consultation with members, in order to continue to find out and represent your views and concerns.

We will then meet again with management to discuss the outcomes of these consultations and their industrial implications, such as:

  • The manner of appointments
  • The status of Position Descriptions / Statements of Duties
  • The proposed change of status from full time to part year employment Arrangements.
The document is a proposal; the PSA has not made any agreements to progress it, and will not agree to any proposal that undermines your rights at work.
