DJJ ban on Cessna 310 lifted

05 August 2008

The Association and the Department had a meeting on Monday, 4th of August 2008 to discuss issues of concern with the use of Cessna 310 Aircraft as outlined in our Bulletin dated 1st August 2008.

The Department have advised the Association in writing that they are already undertaking an extensive risk evaluation of the Cessna 310 aircraft and air transport procedures. In addition, the Department also undertakes to:

  • where possible, limit the use of Cessna 310;
  • authorise a blanket use of restraining belts, if deemed necessary by Transport staff, whilst in transit;
  • request that Wagga Air remove the seat directly behind the co-pilot to allow better access and surveillance of detainees.
The Department has further undertaken to complete the extensive risk assessment on Cessna 310 Aircraft by Friday, 8th of August and will convene a meeting with the OH&S Committee on the 19th of August for further discussions.

The Association therefore directs its members in the Transport Unit of the Department of Juvenile Justice to lift the ban on the use of the Cessna 310 aircraft.

Authorised by John Cahill, General Secretary, Public Service Association of NSW, 160 Clarence Street, Sydney NSW.
