PSA Direction – Ban on use of Cessna 310 by DJJ

01 August 2008

Over the last couple of months concerns have been raised by members of the Transport Unit of the Department of Juvenile Justice regarding the use of the Cessna 310 to transport detainees.

Members have identified the following safety risks associated with the Cessna 310:

  • Entry and exit by the AirCraft Wing for both Youth Officer and the detainee
  • The lack of space inside the Cabin
  • No identified policy on the seating arrangements within cabin of the Cessna 310, given its limited space
  • No identified Standard Operating Procedures
  • No identified training policies on how to restrain a detainee inside the Cessna 310
  • Lack of Air Conditioning.
These concerns were raised with the Department during an OH&S Committee meeting on Wednesday, 30th of July 2008.

The PSA directs members in the Transport Division of the Department of Juvenile Justice to place an immediate ban on the use of the Cessna 310 effective Friday, 1st of August 2008 until further notice.

Authorised by Steve Turner, Assistant General Secretary, Public Service Association of NSW, 160 Clarence Street, Sydney NSW
