Western Sydney Institute of TAFE: “Class Support Review”20 February 2008What's happened so far...Throughout 2007, the PSA was advised, through quarterly Institute Consultative Committee meetings with WSI TAFE management, that the Institute intended to conduct a review of class support services.A consultant was employed to provide an "options paper", which the PSA was assured would be subject to consultation with relevant unions prior to any further progress. In May, we were advised that consultation meetings were going to happen between class support staff and WSI TAFE management. The PSA asked to participate in these meetings but were not provided with sufficient notice to attend. In fact, many of the meetings had already occurred by the time we were notified. Next, the PSA was informed that the consultant would present a paper to WSI in mid October and it would be provided to all parties involved. In November we were told that it would be presented to the WSI TAFE Board of Management in mid-December then provided to a class support review working party, which is overseeing the review and its progress. The PSA was notified by its members that a document entitled "Class Support Review Research Project 2007" has recently been circulated by WSI. Your union has not been provided with the document by WSI and has not been consulted over its contents. Therefore, in consideration of the inadequate consultation to date, and until the PSA is given fair opportunity to consult with its affected members, we will not support its findings. Where to from here ...In the September 2007 Institute Consultative Committee meeting, the PSA raised concerns about the consultation processes that had occurred so far. We were given assurances from WSI that "consultation with unions, by way of a steering committee [working party], will take place before any final decisions are made or changes implemented". WSI committed to organising a meeting of the working party before 1 March 2008, but a date is yet to be set.The PSA wrote to the R/Institute Director WSI on 17 February 2008 about the lack of consultation with your union to date, making a formal request for documentation and seeking a commitment from WSI to engage in proper consultation. A response has been requested by Friday 22 February 2008. The PSA has commenced holding meetings with class support members to gain input from you about what should happen regarding your jobs, and will continue to do so over the coming weeks. Please contact one your PSA representatives on the working party to give your feedback, get involved and to join the PSA.
