RTA Sydney Harbour Bridge Tolls – Staffing & Voluntary Redundancies

04 September 2007

PSA representatives met with the RTA on Friday 31 August 2007 to discuss a written proposal dated 30 August 2007 in relation to an offer of Voluntary Redundancy to those staff who had expressed an interest in July.

The proposal also considered the on-going staffing requirements for the collection of cash tolls at both the South- side Harbour Bridge Toll Plaza and Milsons Point.

The RTA has finally advised that the existing staffing establishment is 64 staff for the positions of Toll Controller, Group Leader, Collector/Group Leader and Collectors.

Due to the increasing use of E-Toll the NEW staffing establishment is reduced to 49 EFT staff composed of: -

  • 5 effective Full-Time Toll Controller positions
  • 9 effective Full-Time Group Leader positions
  • 35 effective Full-Time Collectors, Part-Time Collectors, Collector/Group Leader positions.

In order for the parties to successfully negotiate a new roster for Sydney Harbour Bridge Toll staff. The RTA now needs to know how many Toll staff are willing to take up an offer of Voluntary Redundancy. The PSA understands that the RTA received 20 expressions of interest for V.R. during July.

The parties have agreed to the following time-line:-

The RTA will write to those staff who have expressed an interest in Voluntary Redundancy requesting advice that staff members are willing to take up the offer and that they nominate an exit date from the RTA. The response to the RTA will be considered as the date of acceptance of an offer of Voluntary Redundancy. The RTA's letter to staff will provide a final calculation of each staff member's entitlement.

The PSA strongly recommends that each member who is considering accepting an offer of V.R. should receive independent financial advice and should also contact State Super as to the financial implications in each case.

The PSA expects affected members of staff to receive their V.R. letters of offer on or about the 14 September 2007. That the RTA will request a returned signed confirmation from each staff member within 2 weeks.

Once the RTA knows the exact number of staff who have accepted redundancy then the parties can finalise negotiations around on-going staff numbers and a new roster for all Toll staff.

In order to deal with any individual member issues PSA officers and delegates will be available in the south side meal room on Wednesday 12 September 2007 between 1.30 and 2.30pm.

For further information, contact your local delegate or the PSA/RTA organisers on 9290 1555.
