SAS Staff News, November 2323 November 2006Mass meetings and Sky Channel Broadcast, November 30All School Administrative and Support Staff are encouraged to attend the 'Your Rights @ Work' meeting. SAS staff who attend a meeting will not be on strike or a "Stop Work'.The Government has confirmed that SAS staff can access flexible working hours, or make local arrangements with their school to attend. Our wages and conditions are only protected under a State Award until the next election. Let all politicians know how you feel about 'Your Rights @ Work' by attending a meeting. PSA members, especially those in Western Sydney and regional centres hosting meetings, are encouraged to attend those events. PSA members are directed not to undertake any teachers' duties while they are on their STOP WORK. Supervision of students should not be carried out by PSA members in schools. Principals should make arrangements for procedures if parents drop off students. Teachers' Aides Special should note that they are not to supervise individual students or classes in the absence of a teacher. Sky Channel venues for NSW LINK Recruitment CompetitionCongratulations to Pauline Beale who is the 2006 winner of the Recognition Week Recruitment Competition. Pauline is the winner of the weekend in the Hunter Valley and $500 spending money - Donated by SGE Credit Union and the PSA.Thank you to all of you who entered the competition and best of luck next time. School Reports DisputeThe dispute over school reports between the NSW Teachers' Federation and the Government should not affect School Administrative & Support Staff. If you normally photocopy or type part of the reports you can continue to do so. If you do not normally have anything to do with the reports then you do the same this year.Under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you do the reports for teachers even if you are directed to by your Principal. If you have any problems relating to the reports please ring the Schools Team at the PSA. Multi-skilling of School Administrative OfficersSchool Administrative Officers should be aware that these positions are not solely office based. Those who work in the Library, Science or Food Technology are also School Administrative Officers. If you have been working in the office you can be asked by the Principal to work in the Library. You should not work in Science unless you are appropriately trained. Any change to your position has to be done by negotiation. If you are being pressured to work in other areas and you are not comfortable with this please contact the PSA Schools Team and we will assist you.Recording Absences on OASIS - ReminderThe PSA has not agreed to any change in the way that student absences are currently processed i.e. primary schools do not have to enter this information on OASIS. High Schools currently enter student absences on OASIS. In the majority of Primary Schools class rolls are maintained by the class teacher.Excursions/CampsPSA members have been informed by DET via the Human Resources Directorate Excursion Form and confirmed by district offices that they will not be paid overtime if that time includes travel. This is incorrect. You are on duty from the time you arrive at school and sign on, your day is completed when you sign off to go home.If you have been requested to attend the excursion and it leaves the school at 7.30 am, that is the start of your working hours for that day. If it returns at 3.30 pm, that is the end of your working day. Any hours over 6 ¼ for that day is overtime and must be paid to you as overtime. If it exceeds 2 ½ hours overtime then it will need to be paid at time and a half. Attending excursions/camps is not in your duty statement, so you cannot be directed to go. If DET is not willing to pay you the overtime then the PSA advises that you do not attend any excursions/camps. If you have any problems re this issue, please contact the PSA's Schools Team on 9290 1555. Student Email Link InformationMembers have informed the PSA that DET has been sending a trainer to schools to train SAS staff on the implementation of setting up the Email Link for each student. This is not your job. It is a huge NEW JOB and SAS staff cannot possibly fit any more into a 6 ¼ hour work day. The alternative is for schools to hire a casual for as long as it takes to complete the task.If you are being pressured to take this on, ring the Schools Team on 9290 1555. Computers and TechnologySchool administrative staff are not to be the computer coordinator in schools. Each school has a teacher who is to undertake this role. If administrative staff are the computer coordinator then their colleagues are being overloaded with work because there is no allowance in school budgets for backfilling of administrative staff who are redeployed from their duties to undertake this computer coordinator role. For the same reasons administrative staff in schools should not undertake the technology role in their school. If you undertake roles that are outside your statement this will mean that your colleagues have to do extra work to compensate. If you are asked to do these roles by your principal you should refuse. If this causes you problems with the principal please contact the PSA. Contacting ParentsSAS Staff should not contact parents regarding welfare issues such as truancy. This is not the role of SAS Staff - it is the role of head teacher welfare or the principal.Acting OpportunitiesWhen the School Administrative Manager is on leave the permanent staff of the school should be offered the opportunity to act in that position. If this is not occurring in your school please contact the PSA.Sue Walsh, President Kris Cruden, Senior Industrial Officer
