Help save the Health Education Library!

02 June 2006

The Health Education Library's days are numbered unless it can find a new home by June 30, 2006. The University wants the space currently occupied by the Library for other purposes, and has given them less than two months to find a new space to hold their collection, or else they will be closed, and the three staff left without jobs. What is worse, University management is currently offering no assistance in the search for a new space, making it virtually impossible for the collection and staff to be saved.

At this stage, without mass support from staff and students within the University, it looks likely that the valuable drug and alcohol education programs developed and supported by the library will be lost to students, staff and the community forever. The closure of this Library is not only a personal disaster for its staff, but a catastrophe for the young people of NSW who can only suffer under further weakened drug education programs. The library is also an invaluable resource for education and social work students who use it as a support for the learning of education people about drug and alcohol prevention.

We are already taking action to save the Health Education Library, with a petition (attached) that we need all our members to distribute widely and return to us so that they can be presented to the Vice-Chancellor. It is vital you get out in your work area and get the petition signed by as many people as possible, and returned to us by Friday the 16th of June so we can use them while there is still time to save the Library.

Return completed petitions to the CPSU Office in the Transient Building on main campus, or post them back to the CPSU (Attn: Michael Janda, G.P.O. Box 3365, Sydney NSW 2001) by Friday 9 June. For more information about these campaigns contact Branch President Ralph Halden at cpsu@mail.usyd.edu.au or ext. 15176, or Organiser Michael Janda at mjanda@psa.asn.au or 0428 410 711.

The more members in the CPSU, the more power General Staff have to control our pay and conditions. If you or your colleagues are not members, join today.
