Aboriginal Education Assistants’ News

17 January 2006

A meeting of the AEA Steering Committee was held at PSA House in Sydney on 14th December. Here are some recommendations and news from that meeting.

STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Below is the draft Statement of Duties to be negotiated with DET in 2006 which has been endorsed by the Steering Committee. Please provide any feedback or comments on the draft to Nella De Fazio by Friday 17th February 2006.

CERTIFICATE III IN ABORIGINAL EDUCATION

The PSA is aware that DET is relying on outdated information regarding the rate of pay for AEAs who have achieved their qualifications in Certificate III. Currently, advice from DET states that you should be paid at the fifth year rate of pay. This is contrary to the Crown Employees (School Administrative and Support Staff) Award, effective from 2004, which entitles AEAs with Certificate III to be paid at the sixth year rate of pay.

The PSA has written to DET informing them of their error and requesting them to retract the incorrect advice immediately. If you have Certificate III and are not receiving the sixth year rate of pay, you should, in the first instance should forward on copies of their qualifications to the Department's School Staffing Services unit in Bathurst. If you are still told that you are not entitled to the sixth year rate of pay, please contact Jacqui Nissim, PSA Industrial Officer on (02) 9220 0904 or jnissim@psa.asn.au

STEERING COMMITTEE VACANCY

A vacancy has arisen in the Western Region. Any AEA wishing to participate in the Steering Committee, who is from that region (preferably from a remote area) should send in a nomination to the PSA, attention Jacqui Nissim, by Friday 3rd February 2006. Please contact Jacqui if you have any questions regarding participating in the Steering Committee.
