SAS Staff News, December 15

15 December 2005

November 15 National Day of Action

Thank you to everyone who attended and participated in the "Rights at Work" National Day of Action.

The PSA would like to acknowledge SAS staff who attended many venues all across New South Wales. There were great turnouts across the State. As with similar meetings on July 1, venues were overwhelmed by the number of people in attendance.

The Work Choices legislation was pushed through the House of Representatives on 7th December after only a few hours debate. The Liberal government used their numbers to stifle any democratic or fair debate about legislation that will dramatically change our working lives.

Congratulations to all those schools who have signed and returned the Rights at Work Charter - special acknowledge-ment to Killarney Heights High and Moorland Public the first schools to return the charter to the PSA.

Schools are encouraged to discuss and sign the Charter if they haven't done so already - contact the PSA if you need a copy or any background information. Please visit the ACTU's Rights at Work campaign website the ACTU's Rights at Work campaign website or the PSA's website for current information about this ongoing campaign.

General Assistants Statement of Duties

As it has not been updated for some time, the Department has provided the PSA with a draft of a revised statement of duties for GA's. A number of our GA's have already commented on this draft - thanks to those members for their time and expertise. If you would like to receive a copy of the draft statement, in order to provide feedback to the PSA prior to our consultation with the Department, please contact Nella De Fazio, at ndefazio@psa.asn.au or (02) 9220 0976.

Contractor Time Sheets

The PSA has recently become aware that, in some cases, contractors such as Spotless are providing their time sheets and work evaluation forms to SAS staff to sign off on. SAS staff should be reminded that it is neither the Administrative staff nor the General Assistants' responsibility to monitor or account for the work done by contractors.

The PSA is also concerned about the cavalier attitude of some private contractors regarding their need to be accredited and trained for work in our schools. In one particularly appalling incident a PSA member was threatened and verbally attacked for quite properly questioning the presence on school grounds of workers with no identification or green card.

PSA Training Program 2006

The PSA has released its training program for January - May 2006. It is available at the PSA website or by contacting the PSA's Training Unit on (02) 9220 0984. Remember, under the Crown Employees (School Administrative and Support Staff) Award and the Crown Employees (Conditions of Employment) Award, all PSA members are entitled to 12 days biannual paid union training leave. All PSA members are encouraged to attend union training.

FMWeb, STEMS, SSTARTS and CSA6 data

Members should not carry out duties related to STEMS, FM WEB, SSTARTS and CSA6 data entry and management. These duties are not recognised as SAS Staff duties. Don't worry if you have never heard of some of these programs - they are in limited usage in particular parts of the state. There has been no consultation with the PSA in relation to these systems. The Department has given us advice that these programs should be administered by teaching staff.

The PSA has requested meetings with the department to discuss these issues. To date we have been ignored.

Members should not carry out any duties associated with the above programs until discussions are finalised and agreement reached between the parties. This extends to all SAS staff including teachers' aides, general assistants and Aboriginal education assistants.

Enrolment forms

The Department seems to have had a memory lapse. Additional resources were promised to deal with the additional workload created by the introduction of the new student enrolment form. However the department has failed to allocate additional staffing. Members should not process the new forms until further advice from the PSA.

Recruitment Campaign

Congratulations to Helen Walker, School Administrative Officer employed at Asquith Girls High School who is the winner of the PSA Recruitment Competition. Helen has won $500.00 cash and a weekend away to the Hunter Valley. The trip was donated by SGE Credit Union - the credit union for PSA members. Thank you to all who entered and made it a successful campaign. A big welcome to the new members recruited through the competition.

Thank You from the President

I would like to take this opportunity to thank members for their support during 2005. Also my thanks go to the many delegates who give so much of their time in support of the PSAs commitment to negotiating improvements to your pay and conditions of employment while also balancing their work and family life.

2006 is going to be a tough year for all unions as a result of the Federal Government's anti-union legislation. The PSA with the NSW government is campaigning very hard against the legislation.

Have a good break - you have certainly earned it. Happy and safe Christmas to you and yours and we look forward to your continued support next year.
