SAS Staff (School) News 18 November, 200518 November 2005Transportation of StudentsIt has come to the PSA's attention that some SAS staff are still transporting students in their own vehicles. Transporting students is NOT the role of SAS Staff, and you should not be requested or expected to perform this role.
Aside from it not being your responsibility to supervise students in any way, there are the following concerns about SAS staff transporting students:
Child Protection
SAS staff should NEVER be put in the situation where they are alone with a student.
Indemnity
Recovery of costs in case of an accident causing damage to the vehicle may be compromised.
Liability
For student injury or death. Despite any promises from the Department, it cannot indemnify employees against criminal charges, which could arise from an incident as unexpected as a traffic accident. Such charges are not unprecedented in the public sector. The Department has issued a memorandum (DN/02/00518 IRC 02/33) to all Principals and District Superintendents which supports the PSA's position. Contact the Department's Corporate Services division if you require a copy.
THIS IS A PSA DIRECTION THAT SAS STAFF MUST NOT TRANSPORT STUDENTS, EITHER IN PRIVATE VEHICLES OR SCHOOL BUSES
Members should contact the PSA immediately on (02) 9220 0976 if they are discriminated against or intimidated for refusing to transport students.
November 15 National Day of ActionReports have been coming in of great turnouts in venues across New South Wales. The Sydney rallies saw an estimated 10,000 people at Martin Place and 20,000 at Belmore Park. A big thank you to everyone who attended the Sky Channel broadcasts.
