SPECIAL EDUCATION STEERING COMMITTEEThe Special Education Steering Committee met on 23 March to discuss PSA objectives for 2005. This committee represents all PSA Teachers Aides (Special) across NSW and has been instrumental in improving conditions for Teachers Aides (Special). In 2004 the committees achievements included PSA run state-wide training days, induction days for SAS Staff, the campaign for a TAS register and it won permanency for the 660 positions created throughout special education. These positions were announced as part of the overhaul of special education. This overhaul continues and currently the Advisory Group set up by the Department is writing a report on special education. Your Steering Committee plays an important role in this process as it ensures that the Advisory Group has all the information it needs to provide a report that recognises the needs of TAS. In 2005 the committee will be campaigning around OH&S and permanency for Teachers Aides (Special). It will also continue consulting with the Advisory Group, and it will work to create a TAS register. TEACHERS AIDE (SPECIAL) REGISTERNegotiations continue and we are meeting with the Department in April for further discussions. The Special Education Steering Committee has revised the Joint Statement on Role Boundaries in the Provision of Support at School for Students Requiring Health Care Procedures due to members concern that the original agreement was difficult to understand. We are currently in negotiation with the Department over the final agreement and we hope to have the agreement ready for publication early next term. Please be aware that if you are undertaking health care procedures you must be trained and you must be in receipt of the allowance. If you are required to undertake clean intermittent catheterisation or shallow suctioning you must apply for special consideration. Shallow suctioning includes removal of secretions from the mouth, nose or around the tracheostomy tube. Under no circumstances must you insert suctioning equipment past the back teeth, change a tracheostomy tube, or insert gastrostomy or naso-gastric tubes.
