SAS Staff News – November 404 November 2004Student Enrolment FormMembers have contacted the PSA with concerns relating to additional information required from parents/ carers when completing the new student enrolment form. The Association contacted the Department many months ago to arrange a meeting to discuss the fact that the Department had not produced a current enrolment form for schools. At that stage, the major problem for the PSA was the inclusion of a parental consent form for students to obtain and use an email account. The PSA's position was that the consent form should be part of the enrolment form and not a separate document, which would mean double handling for SAS staff. The Department arranged another meeting for the PSA to discuss this issue with appropriate departmental staff. At this meeting we were able to air our concerns and the Department further advised that they were designing a new enrolment form to capture information required by national agreements. Schools have now received new enrolment forms, together with 3 supporting documents advising of the new requirements which will impact, not only on the workload for SAS staff, but also on the type of information relating not to students, but sensitive information about parental situations which have in some cases caused offence to parents who have conveyed their resentment to our members. Members should refer parental inquiries in relation to the additional information required to the Principal. The PSA will seek a meeting with the Department to further discuss the above issue. However, we are happy to advise that the PSA was successful in having the web services consent declaration included in the enrolment form. Web ServicesThe DET Implementation Committee for Web Services has now been finalised. Members are urged NOT to take on roles of Site Manager or Systems Administrator in regard to Web Services Product. SAS Staff are not to agree to be responsible for facilitating the implementation of web services at the school level. If schools wish to use the automatic subject class groups function within the web services, all students'subject/classes information must be in OASIS. Many schools use other programs to maintain this information. These programs are not compatible when using web services, which is developed on the OASIS system. The PSA does not support SAS Staff being required to use and maintain duplicate systems. Permanency For Long Term Temporary SAS StaffThe Department has agreed to another round of permanency for long term temporary employees. The PSA has been successful in convincing the department that the definition of "long term temporary employee" should be a person who has worked continuously in any SAS staff position or positions for a period of 4 terms or more. (Previously, it has been 6 terms)For the purpose of this exercise, the PSA's position is that continuous service means employment on at least one occasion in every fortnightly pay period, except where the principal has approved leave and such leave is supported by appropriate documentation. This process is to start immediately and the departmentis currently identifying SAS staff vacancies. The PSA met with the Department this morning and discussed the timeframe for this process. As soon as the timeframe is agreed the PSA will advise members.
