POVB - DIRECTION TO ALL MEMBERS RE MSPC JOB CUTS DISPUTE

13 September 2004

Re: Failure to Consult on Downsizing MSPC (7 & 9 Wing Closure) resulting in strike action 1.30pm 13/09/04 – 1.30pm 14/09/04

The POVB MSPC sub-branch has taken 24 hour strike action for the above period. This is a result of the Department's failure to consult and produce an operational agreement for the center giving the required 21 days notice, and time to allow the above sub-branch to consider and discuss their proposal. As a result of this long-standing agreed protocol between all parties not being adhered to, the above action has been taken.

The POVB State Executive sought through Deirdre Hunter, the Director of Workforce Relations, 72 hours to consult and negotiate this matter. However, this was rejected out of hand by the Department. This has led to a Long Bay Complex meeting at 8am on 14/09/04, where further support will be called for.

After careful consideration by the State Executive of the ramifications of management's failure to consult staff and members we seek the support of all our members statewide. (CESU and Correctional Centres) to place a ban on POVB members working in the positions of Assistant Superintendents and above.

Tony Howen, POVB Country Vice Chair
Brian McCann, POVB State Secretary
Paul Jones, POVB State Vice President
