Home Campaign Bulletins TAFE/DET
DET/TAFE Industrial Bulletin, 14 July, 200419 July 2004PHASE 8 TIMELINEPhase 8 is progressing steadily (ahem)... potentially displaced officers, who have not yet found a position, will be receiving, or have already received, a letter formally declaring them as 'displaced'.
What happens next?
And then what?
If you're in this position, let us know!!
POSITIONS AVAILABLEThere are still positions available on the DET web site The Association is aware of a number of internally advertised positions that no one has applied for. These positions, as with other "hard to fill" positions, are, following agreement with your union, externally advertised. We strongly recommend that displaced staff, who haven't yet been successful in finding a position, continue to actively seek placement. Again, if you're in this position, please let us know ASAP. We want to help as many members as possible get jobs.
STAFF MOBILITYManagement have advised us that the Bill for moving the majority of TAFE staff under the PSEM Act 2002 will be presented during the next session of Parliament. We will continue to update members on this matter.
LONG-TERM TEMPORARY STAFF
The Association fielded numerous distressed calls from long-term temps who had, in many cases, been employed continuously with the Department for year. Typical comments included:- Unfortunately these hard working and loyal employees were faced with what might best be described as a brutal amputation from the Department. In some cases affected staff were informed via couriered letters, if they were lucky, or facsimiles, giving as much as 24 hours to as little as 2 hours notice to pack their belongings, notify family members, say a quick goodbye and leave. Members rang the Association in tears saying, "but there is so much work at the present time. It's just totally chaotic. I've been here so long. I just wasn't told" For the record, it states in the PSEM Act 2002 s30 "The appropriate Department Head may dispense with the services of a Departmental temporary employee at any time." In the Premiers Memorandum No. 96-5, it states "four weeks notice or payment in lieu." Long-term temps were dispensed with at a moments notice and given four weeks payment in lieu. Though the legislation allows for it, the Department could have chosen to act with greater compassion.
WORKFORCE 'CHANGE FATIGUE'The Association is busily dealing with a host of issues arising out of the restructure and is handling a number of individual and group cases at present.
If you have a situation that needs our attention, please contact your relevant PSA Organiser:-- One of our chief concerns is that members are not contacting their relevant Organiser until their matter has significantly escalated. It's preferable if issues are raised directly with us early on and dealt with as soon as possible.
500 MORE TAFE JOBS TO GO?Some members have recently received incorrect information that approximately 500 more jobs are to be cut from TAFE this financial year. The Association has since contacted the Department and were informed that these staff reductions have already occurred as part of the Corporate Service Review and LL2. That is, in the main, staff have moved from TAFE to DET.
DELETED POSITIONSThe Association reminds members not to perform the duties of a deleted position. Please contact your DET or TAFE Organiser if this is occurring in your unit.
SOLIDARITYDo you have any mates at work who aren't in the Union? Do you think they've ever considered who wins their pay rises? Or who won recreation leave, maternity and parental leave, flex time, sick leave, redundancy payments, etc, for them? It's Union members who get the 'wins'. Time and again, it's our Union who goes into to bat for all DET employees. Maybe if you passed on a copy of this bulletin and a membership application form to a colleague at work who's not a member of the Association, they might consider supporting their Union too. You can download a membership application form from our website.
DET WORKGROUP MEETINGSThane Pearce, the Acting Industrial Officer for DET, and Adela Lyle, our DET Organiser, look forward to meeting with members over the coming months. Keep an eye out for bulletins announcing meetings times and venues. We're always happy to meet with members during lunch, before or after hours, in both formal and informal settings. Please let us know if you would like to organise a meeting.
